Overview

Sajama Mountain is considered the highest peak in Bolivia (6542 m). It is located west of La Paz, in the department of Oruro, within the Sajama National Park and is part of the Western Cordillera. It is a stratovolcano andesitic in Bolivia, the slopes of the snowy are inhabited by the queñuales (Polylepis), forming an open and stunted forest, which is considered one of the highest forests in the world. It is considered an extinct volcano.

Itinerary description

Day 01: La Paz - Sajama Village - Sajama Base Camp 4200 masl

Our departure is in the morning in private transport, from La Paz, we will cross beautiful landscapes of the plateau seeing the rivers, canyons of the area, Chullpas (cemeteries) of the Culture of the Aymara’s Lord, the fauna of camelids and flora. The trip is 4 hours by bus; then we will continue with the mules to the base camp for 3 hours of walking.

Overnight at Sajama Base Camp

Day 02: Sajama Base Camp 4200 masl - High Camp 5.700 masl

In the morning we will prepare the equipment for the porters, to move to the next camp, by a little marked path, passing the ridge we will continue in zigzag until arriving at the high camp. Approximate ascent time 4 to 5 hours.

Overnight stay at the High Camp of Sajama.

Day 03: High Camp 5.700 m. - Sajama Summit 6542 masl - Sajama Base Camp 4200 masl

We will begin the climb at 1:00 am, with our respective mountain safety equipment, the first part of the road consists of a ridge, then is to overcome a mixed wall, until crossing a thin ridge and then is to follow the glacier, until you get the desired summit. From the summit, you will be able to appreciate the Parinacotas, Pomerape and the rest of the Cordillera Real. The descent is by the same route of ascent. The climbing time is approximately 10 to 12 hours.

Day 04: Sajama Base Camp 4200 masl - Sajama Village - La Paz

This day we will pack our equipment to return to mobility, and then transfer to La Paz.  If possible we will visit the hot springs.

Return to La Paz.
