Overview

Nevado Copa is located in the Cordillera Blanca of the Peruvian Andes within the Huascaran National Park in the Ancash region where its highest point of elevation reaches 6188 m, acting as a natural boundary between the provinces of Asuncion and Carhuaz.

Copa has a plateau-shaped structure rising from 5200 meters to the summit at 6188 m. Part of the western slopes are ideal for skiing, however there are section to avoid that have deep crevasses.

Itinerary

  • Day 01: Huaraz - Vicos 3100 masl - C. B. Lejiacocha 4700 masl
  • Day 02: Lejiacocha base camp - High camp 5200 masl
  • Day 03: High camp – Summit Copa 6188 masl - Base camp.
  • Day 04: Base camp - Vicos - Huaraz

Itinerary description

Day 01: Huaraz - Vicos 3100 masl - C. B. Lejiacocha 4700 masl

Our expedition begins from the city of Huaraz were we set off approximately 2 hours by bus to the town of Vicos. From here we will start our hike on a Zigzag trail that will take us through farmland and a eucalyptus forest until we reach lake Lejiacocha. We will spend the rest of the day setting up camp and getting settled for the night. Approximately 5 to 6 hours.

Day 02: Lejiacocha Base Camp - High Camp 5200 masl

Our hike begins along the edge of lake Lejiacocha until we reach the moraine field. From here we will cautiously navigate around large rocks, making our way through the moraine until arriving at the glacier. We will then ascend the glacier until we reach a large plateau (high camp 5200m) where we will setup camp. Approximately  4 to 5 hours.

Day 03: High camp - Summit Copa 6188 m - Base camp.

We will begin our climb to the summit at around 1:00 am. Navigating the glacial plateau, zigzagging and overcoming crevasses and other obstacles until we reach the summit. From the summit we will have an impressive view of the surrounding peaks. We will descend back to high camp to dismantle the tents, pack our gear and then descend further to lake Lejiacocha base camp. 9 to 12 hours.

Day 04: Base Camp - Vicos - Huaraz

We will begin our hike, approximately 4 to 5 hours, back to the town of Vicos and board the bus that will drive us 2 hours back to the city Huaraz. Transfer to the hotel; end of our services.
