Overview

The Inca Trail is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Located in the Andes, the Inca Trail lasts 4 days and passes through several Andean environments, including cloud forest and alpine tundra. Throughout this hike and up to the Puerta Del Sol (Inti Punku) on the Machu Picchu Mountain, we can find settlements, tunnels, and Inca ruins and enjoy the wonderful views of the Citadel. This trail takes you above 4,200 m. There are many well-preserved ruins along the way, a variety of ecosystems and stunning landscapes.

  • Day 01: Cusco 3399 masl - Chilca - Wayllabamba 3800 masl
  • Day 02: Wayllabamba 3800 masl - Warmiwañusca 4215 masl - Pacaymayo 3800 masl
  • Day 03: Pacaymayo 3800 masl - Runquraqay - Sayacmarca - Puyupatamarca 3600 masl - Wiñayhuayna 2700 masl
  • Day 04: Wiñayhuayna 2700 masl - Machu Picchu 2490 masl - Cusco

Itinerary description

Day 01: Cusco 3399 masl - Chilca - Wayllabamba 3800 masl

We will leave at 6 am, from the city of Cusco in private transportation, until kilometer 82. It is here where we will start the hike with our respective trekking equipment; during our trip, we will visit two archaeological sites, as well as the flora and fauna of this area. We will also observe the snowy Veronica.  Finally, in 6 to 7 hours of walking, we will arrive at our campsite. 13 km.

Overnight camp Wayllabamba.

Day 02: Wayllabamba 3800 masl - Warmiwañusca 4215 masl - Pacaymayo 3800 masl

Today we start the most difficult day of this hike, in the middle of nature and the songs of the birds will be a scenario of our ascent to Warmiwañusca at 4215 meters, it is the highest point of our trip, where we will be able to take many pictures of the wonderful views for our travel album, then we will descend to the valley of Pacaymayo, place of camping. The approximate time of hike is 7 hours. 16 km.

Day 03: Pacaymayo 3800 masl - Runquraqay - Sayacmarca - Puyupatamarca 3600 masl - Wiñayhuayna 2700 masl

Today we start our walk during the morning, in about 30 minutes we arrive at the archaeological group Runkuraqay. Then we will continue to the highest point and then descend to the archaeological group called Sayaqmarca and other archaeological points.  We will be entering the protected area where it is possible to see Andean deer, local birds, etc. Approximate walking time is 8 hours. 11 km.

Overnight camp Wiñayhuayna.

Day 04: Wiñayhuayna 2700 masl - Machu Picchu 2490 masl - Cusco

Today we will leave early in the morning, traveling towards the Inti Punku (Gate of the Sun). Our objective of this walk is to appreciate the sunrise and also to have a wide panorama of the whole Inca citadel. We continue the walk for another hour to the historic sanctuary of Machupicchu, where we will have a guided tour for 2 hours, then you can enjoy the place on your own to appreciate all the attractions of the architectural complex as well as take all the photos and videos you want. Around 4 pm, we will board the train from the town of Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo and then to Cusco.

Return to Cusco.
