Overview

The Salkantay trek is an authentic adventure in which you can walk up one of the highest points in Peru: the Salkantay (open) pass and then descend through a tropical cloud forest. It is a different adventure than traditional routes. This hike allows you to enjoy spectacular landscapes, high Andean peaks, streams, and rainforests, enjoy 3 nights of the starry sky, rainforest plantations, among other natural attractions. It is recommended to be acclimatized. It also allows us to visit the Historic Sanctuary of Machupicchu. Total route of 73 km.

Itinerary description

Day 01: Cusco 3399 masl - Mollepata 2860 masl - Soraypampa 3800 masl

Our departure is from the city of Cusco, in private transport at 5:00 am, we will cross the villages. Then we drive to Challacancha 3600 m. the starting point of the hike, to get the best views at the top of the valley to appreciate the panoramic views of the entire Limatambo Valley and the native villages and other snow-covered mountains in the Andes, our hike continues through the vegetation and a narrow path between the dark hills, much of the way is flat and flat on the edge of the water channel to Soraypampa, the trail is considered original Inca Trail that connects the Peruvian coast and the oldest cities of the Inca era, following the narrow road and colorful landscapes over the Limatambo Valley, in the afternoon rest for the ascent to the lagoon and takes a pleasant and enjoyable time, it is recommended for the views and the sunset, before the evening we descend to the camp for dinner and overnight in tents. 6 to 7 hours.

Day 02: Soraypampa 3800 masl - Salcantay Pass 4630 masl - Chaullay 2900 masl

We will start our hike by a very marked path until the highest part of the route, approximately 4 hours, during the ascent it is clear to appreciate the first view to the mountain Salkantay 6271 m. then we will continue crossing Salkantaypampa, to then begin the steep ascent to Soyroccocha, right next to the impressive views to the glacier of Salkantay 4630 m. The highest pass of the trek where besides enjoying impressive views of the surrounding glaciers and the snow-capped peaks of the Vilcabamba mountain range, you can also see chinchillas and condors in their natural habitat. Then we will descend to the most tropical area and into the so-called cloud forest. Along the route, we can see the remains of an ancient Inca road, which is approximately 3 meters wide, enjoying the increasingly abundant vegetation, passing by waterfalls. After 3 hours of walking, we will reach our campsite. Walk of 8 to 9 hours.

Day 03: Chaullay 2900 masl - Sahuyaco Beach 2000 masl - Santa Teresa (Thermal baths) 1550 masl

We will start our hike in the morning through the cloud forest, then we will cross a small town called Collpapampa. It is here that the Salkantay River becomes the Santa Teresa River. Then we continue our descent to the banks of the Totora River, passing the waterfalls at Coripacchi, the settlement at Wiñaypoko. A place where there are many varieties of fruits such as passion fruit, mango, banana, avocado, and coffee. During midday, we will arrive at the small village of La Playa for lunch and then take a 1-hour public transport to Santa Teresa Huaquiña 1550 m. Where there are thermal baths there is a cost of s / 15.00 (optional), after cooling down in the hot springs we will return to camp. Time of 6 to 7 hours of walking.

Day 04: Santa Teresa 1550 masl - Hydroelectric 1790 masl - Aguas Calientes 2070 masl

Today we will start our walk for 2 hours by the river following the dirt road to the Hydroelectric, on the way we will observe the main electricity plant, then we will continue the last 3 hours walking all the lower valley of the Machupicchu complex; where there is a great amount of biodiversity of plants, orchids, and wildlife like Bears and other animals of the jungle. Finally, we will arrive in a town called Aguas Calientes, to rest and to get information about the next day to Machupicchu (train tickets and entrance to Machu Picchu). Duration of the walk 6 to 7 hours approximately.

Day 05: Aguas Calientes 2070 masl - Macchupichu 2490 masl - Aguas Calientes 2070 masl - Cusco

Today we will start our hike very early to Machupicchu 1 ½ hours or by bus ($ 12.00), on this citadel, we start a complete guided tour of the Inca monument that will last approximately 2 or 3 hours. Afterward, you will have free time to walk around and take pictures.  You also have the option to buy a ticket (in advance), to climb the Huaynapicchu mountain, from where you can see spectacular views of Machupicchu, the valleys and the mountains that surround it (note that there are only 400 visitors allowed per day to visit Huaynapicchu and Machupicchu mountain ($ 15.00) or visit the Temple of the Moon, the gate of the sun and the impressive Inca Bridge. In the afternoon, return to Aguas Calientes to board the Expedition train (6:35 pm), to Ollantaytambo and board the bus 2 hours back to your respective hotel in Cusco.

Return to Cusco.
