Overview

Considered one of the best trekking routes in the Cordillera Blanca, this classic trek is located in the Áncash region and crosses Huascarán National Park, offering spectacular views of iconic peaks over 6,000 meters (19,685 ft) such as Alpamayo, Paria, Pisco, and Caraz.

Recommendations:

  • If you wish to undertake this type of trek, prior acclimatization is required, and you should be in good physical condition throughout the trekking program.

Itinerary description

Day 01: Huaraz – Cashapampa – Llamacorral 3,760 m / 12,336 ft

Morning pickup from your hotel in Huaraz by private transport. We travel north through the Callejón de Huaylas, passing Carhuaz, Yungay, and Caraz. From Caraz, we ascend to Cashapampa, where donkeys and muleteers await to carry our equipment up the Santa Cruz Valley to Llamacorral Camp. Along the route, we observe native vegetation along the Santa Cruz River.

Overnight: Llamacorral Camp

Day 02: Llamacorral – Jatuncocha – Taullipampa 4,250 m / 13,944 ft

We begin the day with stunning valley views, hiking past Ichiccocha and Jatuncocha lakes. Continuing to the Quisuar junction, we ascend in zigzags toward the Arhuaycocha Valley, reaching the Alpamayo viewpoint, with views of Alpamayo, Quitaraju, Artesonraju, Parón, and Aguja peaks.

Overnight: Taullipampa Camp

Day 03: Taullipampa – Punta Unión Pass – Cachina Pampa

Pass 4,750 m / 15,584 ft

Camp: 3,800 m / 12,467 ft

A steady zigzag ascent leads us toward Punta Unión Pass, with impressive views of Taulliraju and surrounding alpine landscapes. From the pass, we enjoy panoramic views before descending to Cachina Pampa Camp.

Overnight: Cachina Pampa Camp

Day 04: Cachina Pampa – Vaquería – Paccharuri 4,100 m / 13,451 ft

We hike through the Huaripampa Valley, passing picturesque villages. After reaching Vaquería, we gradually ascend through native shrubs and trees to Paccharuri Camp, which offers excellent views of Chopicalqui Peak.

Overnight: Paccharuri Camp

Day 05: Paccharuri – Portachuelo Pass – Yurakcorral

Pass: 4,770 m / 15,650 ft

Camp: 3,800 m / 12,467 ft

A gradual ascent brings us to Portachuelo Pass, usually reached in about three hours. From the pass, we enjoy exceptional views of glacial lakes and major peaks of the Cordillera Blanca, including Huascarán (North & South), Huandoy, Pisco, Chacraraju, and more.

Overnight: Yurakcorral Camp

Day 06: Yurakcorral – Pisco Base Camp – Moraine Camp 4,850 m / 15,912 ft

We follow a well-marked trail toward Pisco Base Camp, enjoying views of Huandoy, Chacraraju, Pisco, and Chopicalqui. At Base Camp, we organize climbing equipment and continue ascending to Pisco Moraine Camp, preparing for summit day.

Overnight: Moraine Camp (Pisco)

Day 07: Moraine Camp – Pisco Summit – Pisco Base Camp

Summit: 5,750 m / 18,865 ft

An early-morning alpine start takes us to the glacier, where we gear up for the ascent. After 5–6 hours of glacier climbing, we reach the summit of Nevado Pisco, enjoying spectacular 360° panoramic views of Artesonraju, Alpamayo, Caraz, Huascarán, Chopicalqui, Yanapaccha, Chacraraju, Broggi, Huandoy, and more.

We descend to Moraine Camp, dismantle camp, and continue to Base Camp with the support staff.

Overnight: Pisco Base Camp

Day 08: Pisco Base Camp – Llanganuco – Huaraz

With the help of our muleteers, pack animals transport our gear back to Yurakcorral, where private transport awaits. We drive through the Llanganuco Valley, passing the beautiful Orconcocha and Chinancocha (Jatuncocha) lakes, stopping for photos as needed, before returning to Huaraz.
