The Chachani volcano is one of Arequipa’s representative volcanoes located 55 km from the city of Arequipa, it is about 6075 m.a.s.l on the summit. Very little snow can be seen on the mountain due to the dry atmosphere and also the negative effects of climate change play a role.
If you want to make this type of ascent it is necessary to be well acclimatized.
We will start our departure from the city of Arequipa in private transportation for 3 hours until we reach the starting point of the hike. Our walk to base camp (5250masl) is approximately 2 hours so it is recommended to leave a little later because of the accessibility.
Overnight camp at Chachani Base Camp.
Our departure is approximately at 2:00 am, the ascent to the summit is not very difficult and we follow the zigzagging path along the northern ridge with a duration of 6 hours of ascent. During the ascent you can see the peaks of Sabancay, Ampato, and Coropuna. Once at the top we will observe the inactive crater of the Chachani volcano and at certain times of the year the Peruvian coast can be visible on the horizon; the return is by the same ascent route.
