Urus is one of the classical mountains of the Cordillera Blanca, located northeast of the city of Huaraz, in the Ishinca valley. This mountain is an option for acclimatization, for later climbing of higher mountains and technical difficulty.
If you want to do this type of climbing, it is necessary to acclimatize previously for several days and be in good physical/technical conditions.
The itinerary is a model to follow, however, situations such as natural disasters, climate change, landslides, political unrest, strikes, demonstrations, changes in government regulations or another force majeure may cause this program to vary.
We will start our expedition from the city of Huaraz on a private bus, which will take us to Cochapampa. Here the muleteers will be waiting for us and they will take all the equipment to the base camp. The approximate journey up the valley from the Queñuales is approximately 4 to 5 hours.
We will begin climbing at around 3 am, we will hike through a zigzagging path that is along a steep ridge until we reach the glacier. This is where our climb begins Once we reach the summit, we are met with stunning views of the neighboring mountain peaks of Ranrapalca, Ishinca, Palcaraju, Tocllaraju, Akilpo, Copa, etc. Then we will start the descent by the same route of ascent to the base camp.
Climbing time is approximately 8 to 9 hours.
On the third day, we will hike around 3 to 4 hours through the hiking trail down the valley to Cochapampa, where we finish our hike and return by bus to Huaraz approximately 1 ½ hour.
This program is designed exclusively for private groups in order to provide you a better experience. We have local certified guides and support team at your disposal. If you have any questions regarding our packages and pricing options please feel free to contact us.
Taking my 60-year-old dad and my brother-in-law up Urus for their first big peak was an incredible experience, and it’s all thanks to the 5-star service Alex provided. From the start, Alex treated this as a true family adventure, giving us the kind of personalized attention that made an extreme climb feel surprisingly manageable. He was incredibly thorough with our safety and gear, which was a huge relief since it was the first time for both my dad and brother-in-law. The camp setup was another highlight; the staff was so accommodating, and the cooked food was fantastic—they even went out of their way to cater specifically to our different food allergies, which is no small feat at that altitude. Even though we were in a rugged environment, Alex’s eye for detail and his patient guidance made the whole trip feel seamless. We all felt completely taken care of, and seeing my dad reach the summit with such a professional at our side is something I’ll never forget.
