Overview

The Huayhuash Range, considered one of the 10 most beautiful trekking circuits in the world, is one of the most impressive mountain ranges in the Peruvian Andes. Along its 30 km (19 mi) north–south extension, it features 7 peaks over 6,000 meters (19,685 ft) and 7 summits above 5,500 meters (18,045 ft). Its diverse and breathtaking landscapes offer truly unique panoramic views and outstanding natural beauty.

Itinerary description

Day 1: Huaraz – Cuartelhuain Camp

Departure by private vehicle from Huaraz heading south through Recuay, Ticapampa, and Catac, reaching Conococha Pass (4,050 m / 13,287 ft). We then turn east toward Chiquián and continue along a dirt road through Llamac and Pocpa villages, arriving at Cuartelhuain Camp (4,100 m / 13,451 ft).

Overnight: Cuartelhuain Camp

Day 2: Cuartelhuain – Mitucocha

Morning hike toward Cacananpunta Pass (4,700 m / 15,420 ft) with views of Pucacocha Lagoon and the Ninashanca and Rondoy peaks. We then descend to Mitucocha Lagoon (4,270 m / 14,009 ft).

Hiking time: 5–6 hours

Overnight: Mitucocha Camp

Day 3: Mitucocha – Carhuacocha

Ascent to Carhuac Pass (4,630 m / 15,190 ft) offering spectacular views of Siula, Yerupajá, and Jirishanca. Descent to Carhuacocha Lagoon (4,100 m / 13,451 ft).

Hiking time: 4–5 hours

Overnight: Carhuacocha Camp

Day 4: Carhuacocha – Huayhuash

Hike along the lakeshore before ascending to Siula Pass (4,850 m / 15,912 ft) with breathtaking views of Yerupajá (6,634 m / 21,765 ft), Peru’s second-highest mountain, and Siula Grande.

Hiking time: 6–7 hours

Overnight: Huayhuash Camp (4,350 m / 14,272 ft)

Day 5: Huayhuash – Viconga

Climb to Portachuelo de Huayhuash Pass (4,750 m / 15,584 ft) with views of the Raura Range and surrounding peaks. Descend past Viconga Lagoon to the Viconga hot springs.

Hiking time: 5–6 hours

Overnight: Viconga Camp (4,400 m / 14,436 ft)

Day 6: Viconga – Cuyoc

Ascent through a small valley to Cuyoc Pass (5,000 m / 16,404 ft), one of the highest points of the trek, with panoramic views of the Huayhuash Range.

Hiking time: 5–6 hours

Overnight: Cuyoc Camp (4,450 m / 14,600 ft)

Day 7: Cuyoc – Huayllapa

Climb to Santa Rosa Pass (5,070 m / 16,634 ft) with stunning views of Yerupajá, Rasac, Sarapo, Siula, and more. Descend through Cutatambo and the Calinca Valley to Huayllapa Village (3,508 m / 11,509 ft).

Hiking time: 7–8 hours

Overnight: Huayllapa

Day 8: Huayllapa – Gashpapampa

Steady ascent observing Diablo Mudo Peak, reaching Tapush Punta Pass (4,770 m / 15,650 ft) before descending to Gashpapampa Camp (4,500 m / 14,764 ft).

Hiking time: 5–6 hours

Overnight: Gashpapampa Camp

Day 9: Diablo Mudo Summit – Jahuacocha

Early alpine start (2:00 a.m.). Glacier ascent requiring technical equipment (crampons, ice axe, harness) to reach Diablo Mudo Summit (5,350 m / 17,552 ft). Descent through Huacrish Valley to Jahuacocha Lagoon (4,100 m / 13,451 ft).

Total time: 9–12 hours

Overnight: Jahuacocha Camp

Day 10: Jahuacocha – Huaraz

Final ascent to Pampa Llamac Pass (4,300 m / 14,108 ft), followed by descent to Llamac where private transport returns us to Huaraz (3,100 m / 10,171 ft).

Hiking: 4–5 hours | Drive: 4–5 hours
