Overview

Huayhuash is considered among the 10 most beautiful trekking circuits in the world. It is one of the most impressive mountain ranges of Peruvian Andes. In its 30 Km from North to South, 7 mountains over 6000 meters and 7 elevations of more than 5500 meters; its varied and unparalleled scenery and panoramic views make it unique in natural beauty.

  • Day 2: Cuartelhuain 4100masl. - Cacananpunta Pass 4700masl. - Camp Mitucocha 4270masl.
  • Day 3: Mitucocha camp 4270masl. - Carhuac Pass 4630masl. - Carhuacocha Lagoon 4100masl.
  • Day 4: Laguna Carhuacocha 4100masl. - Siula Pass 4850masl. - Huayhuash 4350masl.
  • Day 5: Huayhuash 4350masl. - Paso Portachuelo de Huayhuash 4750masl. - Viconga camp 4400masl.
  • Day 6: Viconga camp 4400masl. - Cuyoc Pass 5000masl. - Cuyoc camp 4450masl.
  • Day 7: Cuyoc camp 4450masl. - Santa Rosa Pass 5070masl - Cutatambo 4265masl. - Huayllapa Village 3508masl.

Itinerary description

Day 1: Huaraz 3100masl. - Chiquian 3400masl. - Llamac 3250masl. - Pocpa 3470masl - Cuartelhuain 4100masl.

We will start our departure from Huaraz by private bus, towards the South of Huaraz, passing through the provinces of Recuay, Ticapampa, and Catac. Reaching the height of Conococha (4050 masl), from there we will deviate to the East, following the road that will take us to Chiquian; then we will continue our trip by a trail, on the way we will pass by the towns of LLamac and Pocpa. Finally arriving at the camp of Cuartelhuain 4100 masl.

Day 2: Cuartelhuain 4100masl. - Cacananpunta Pass 4700masl. - Camp Mitucocha 4270masl.

Departure from the camp in the hours of 7:00 am to the first pass of the trekking called Cacananpunta (4700masl), we will observe the lagoon Pucacocha and the snowy, Ninashanca and Rondoy, next we will make the crossing with direction to the Lagoon Mitucocha (4270masl). Finally, we will descend to the camp (5 to 6 hours approx.).

Day 3: Camp Mitucocha 4270masl. - Carhuac Pass 4630masl. - Carhuacocha Lagoon 4100masl.

Departure from the camp at 7:00 am, we will ascend toward the step reaching a height of the Paso Carhuac (4650masl), with a spectacular view of the snowy Siula, Yerupaja, and Jirishanca, then we will descend until the lagoon Carhuacocha (4650masl), place where we will spend the night (4 to 5 hours approx.).

Day 4: Carhuacocha Lagoon 4100masl. - Siula Pass 4850masl. - Huayhuash 4350masl.

We will begin our hike, along the left bank of the Carhuacocha lagoon (4100masl) until the end of the valley, to begin ascending to the Siula pass (4850masl) from where we will obtain spectacular views of the snow-capped mountains such as the Yerupaja (6634m), considered the second highest mountain in Peru, Siula (6356masl). Finally, we will descend to the Huayhuash camp (4350masl) (6 to 7 hours approx.).

Day 5: Huayhuash 4350masl. - Portachuelo de Huayhuash Pass 4750masl. - Viconga camp 4400masl.

This morning we will ascend to the pass Portachuelo de Huayhuash (4750masl) from where we will appreciate one of the mountain ranges called Raura, as well as the snow-capped mountains Cuyoc, Puscanturpas, Trapecio, Jurao, and Carnicero, then we will descend passing by the Viconga lagoon, finally arriving to the thermal baths of Viconga where we will spend the night (5 to 6 hours approx. of walking).

Day 6: Viconga camp 4400masl. - Cuyoc Pass 5000masl. - Cuyoc camp 4450masl.

During this morning we will ascend by a small path up the valley, until the second highest pass of our trek, Paso Cuyoc (5000masl) from where we will obtain spectacular views of the South and North part of the Huayhuash mountain range, appreciating the snowy Yerupaja, Sarapo, Cuyoc, and others, then we will descend towards the Cuyoc or Elephant camp at an altitude of (4450masl) (5 to 6 hours of trekking approximately).

Day 7: Cuyoc Camp 4450masl. - Santa Rosa Pass 5070masl. - Cutatambo 4265masl. - Huayllapa Village 3508masl.

We will begin our ascent by a little visible way until arriving at the second higher step of the trekking Santa Rosa Step (5070masl) from where we will obtain beautiful panoramic views of the snowy ones of Yerupaja, Rasac, Sarapo, Siula, Ancocancha, Rosario, Tsacra and Huacrish. Then we will descend, passing the camp of Cutatambo (4265masl), finally, we will descend by the Calinca valley until arriving at the town of Huayllapa (3508masl) (7 to 8 hours approx.).

Day 8: Huayllapa Village 3508masl. - Huatiaq 4300masl. - Tapush Punta pass 4770masl. - Gashpapampa 4500masl.

We will initiate our walk from the Town of Huayllapa, in the trajectory we will observe the snowy Mute Devil, following our walk we will arrive until the step Tapush Point (4770masl), of this place, can be observed of equal way we will observe the other face of Diablo Mudo mount, finally, we will descend until the camp Gashpapampa (4500masl) (5 to 6 hours approx.) place where we will spend the night.

Day 9: Gashpapampa 4500masl. - Nev. Diablo Mudo 5350masl. - Jahuacocha Lagoon 4100masl.

Our departure starts at 2 a.m. from our camp, following a path not very visible by all the moraine until arriving in the glacier from where it will be necessary the use of climbing equipment (crampon, ice ax, harness, etc.), climbing in a glacier until the summit of Nev. Diablo Mudo (5530masl), from the summit you can obtain beautiful panoramic views of the snow-capped mountains that compose it to the Cordillera Huayhuash, then we will descend by the Huacrish valley until our next campsite Laguna Jahuacocha (4100masl) (9 to 12 hours approx.).

Day 10: Jahuacocha Lagoon 4100masl. - Pampa Llamac 4300masl. - Llamac 3250masl. - Huaraz 3100masl.

Finally culminating our adventure we will follow the ascent of the last pass called Pampa Llamac (4300masl), where we will appreciate for the last time the imposing snow-capped mountains of the Cordillera Huayhuash, next we will descend by the well-marked road, that will take us until the town of Llamac (4300masl), it is there where our private transport awaits for us that will take us to our place of departure, Huaraz (3100masl) end of the expedition (4 to 5 hours approximately of long walk and 4 to 5 hours of trip in bus).
